TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of volunteers took part in the Clean Up Jakarta event during the Car Free Day in Jakarta. The volunteers were seen picking up garbage lying at Jalan MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta.

Kiki, one of the volunteers and a student at the University of Indonesia, said that she and her friends could fill a sack with various kinds of garbage.

“Most of them are food and beverage packages thrown by residents who exercise,” Kiki told Tempo on Sunday, October 18, 2015.

Along with hundreds of other volunteers, Kiki managed to gather 50 sacks containing garbage to be collected by the city Sanitary Agency.

Ratih, one of the event organizing committee, said that the garbage would be sorted based on types. Ratih added that the recyclable garbage would be given to the agency’s garbage bank, while the unrecyclable garbage would be sent to garbage disposal sites.

Ratih revealed that the event was initiated by Angela Richardson, a British national, in 2013.

“This year, we come to Jakarta and gather other green communities to initiate bigger Clean Up movement,” she said.

Ratih explained that the movement was aimed at raising awareness among residents about the garbage issue. Currently there are about 15,000 volunteers who joined the movement.
