Timor Leste Offers Oil Reserves to Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said said that the Timor Leste government has invited Indonesia to explore the country's oil and gas reserves. The offer was made during a meeting between heads of state of the two neighboring countries on Wednesday, August 26, 2015.


However, Sudirman said that the government will take good consideration on the offer before taking any actions. "It is still in initial discussion. I think with the current condition, there has to be a good consideration," said Sudirman.


Sudirman stated that both Indonesia and Timor Leste had signed a memorandum of understanding on geology back in 2013. Another cooperation was establish between both countries when Indonesia provides the chance for Timor Leste students to study about oil and gas in Cepu.


On Wednesday, August 26, 2015, President Joko Widodo held a meeting with Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste Rui Maria de Araujo. In the meeting, both heads of state discussed several issues including energy, and border issues.
