TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli held his first meeting with his staff on Tuesday, August 18, to discuss tourism sector development aiming at creating new jobs.

Attending the meeting was Minister of Tourism Arif Yahya and representatives from other ministries. To kick off the plan, Rizal will coordinate with the Transportation Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, the Maritime and Fisheries Ministry, and the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.

Rizal explained that the tourism sector would have significant impacts on economic growth of a region. Therefore, Rizal called on Tourism Minister Arif Yahya to achieve a target of 20 million foreign tourists to visit Indonesia within five years.

“20 million tourists in 2019 will generate a foreign exchange of at least US$20 billion,” Rizal said.

Rizal also revealed a plan to develop seven main tourist destinations in addition to Jakarta, Bali and Riau.

“We will develop five to seven top destinations within five years,” he said.
