TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo wants the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and state power company PT PLN to monitor power plant projects.

Speaking at the opening of the Indonesia Geothermal International Convention and Exhibition, held at the Jakarta Convention Center, Wednesday, August 19, the president asked Energy Minister Sudirman Said and PT PLN president director Sofyan Basir to supervise all project development.

Once the license is given to investors, Widodo wants his state officials to have a checklist that can be used to keep up with and monitor the investment process.

"What we don’t want is lack of follow-up after the investment license is issued," he said.

The president said that based on the information he received, Indonesia has a geothermal potential of up to 29,000 MW.

"That's why, if necessary and required, we establish a state enterprise to deal with [geothermal energy] specifically," he said.

Widodo said that Indonesia still heavily relies on fossil energy, with a national usage that accounts for 95 percent of the national energy mix. Therefore, the president said he wants to give a special attention to the new and renewable energy sector, such as problems related to incentives, tariffs and licensing.
