TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) is formulating the establishment of unemployment insurance. This type of insurance is specifically designed for workers who are fired or have their work contracts terminated by their employers.

This step is to anticipate the high number of claims disbursement of the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan's pension savings/retirement insurance program (JHT). Unemployment insurance would be able to provide benefits for people who are out of work or lost their jobs until they find a new way of making money.

Rahma Iryanti, Bappenas deputy for poverty, labor, and small-medium enterprises, said that unemployment insurance is actually something that had been proposed since 2004, prior to the issuance of Law no.40/2004 on the National Social Security System.

This year, Bappenas aims to continue discussions on materializing that plan.

There is no additional information about the insurance scheme and tariff, but Rahma said it would not be made mandatory.
