TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Democratic Party (NasDem) requested the General Election Commission (KPU) to postpone the Surabaya mayor election because there is only one candidate pair, which is Tri Rismaharini and Whisnu Sakti Buan, the incumbent Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Surabaya. "I think [the mayor election] should be postponed. Don't proceed if we only have one candidate pair," said NasDem politician, Effendi "Gus Choi" Choirie.
Gus Choi said that pushing through with the election might result in the emergence of "puppet pairs" to compete with the existing pair. "There is no need for 'puppets'. It will ruin democracy," Gus Choi said.
Gus Choi suggested that any issues related to Surabaya regional government should be governed by an acting official while waiting for the KPU's decision regarding the election.
