Indonesian Banker Named as ABA Chairman

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Sigit Pramono has been appointed as the Chairman of the ASEAN Banker Association (ABA) for the next two years. Sigit, who serves as the incumbent Chairman of the Indonesian National Banks Association (Perbanas), was appointed as the new ABA President for the 2015-2017 period during the 45th ASEAN Banking Council Meeting in Singapore last Friday, June 12, 2015.


Sigit said that Indonesia's leadership in the ABA is becoming increasingly important in relation to the upcoming banking and financial services free-trade system that will be applied in Southeast Asia in 2020. One of the strategic issues that will be discussed by Indonesia in the ABA forum is the need of an integrated payment system in the region.


ABA was established in 1976 with five initial members, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Currently, there are 10 member countries of the ABA, including Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos.
