Staple Food Prices Skyrocketing in Central Jakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A week before Ramadan month, a number of staple food prices in Central Jakarta began to rise between Rp1,000 to Rp5,000.


"Although the the price increases from the source, the increase is still affordable and we see the stock is still safe," said Arifin, Central Jakarta Mayor Representatives, after did unannounced visits (sidak) in Petojo Ilir Market, Gambir, Friday.


Some of the price which increases such as brown sugar from Rp12,000 to Rp16,000 per kilogram, sugar from Rp12,000 to Rp14,000 per kilogram, peanuts from Rp29,000 to Rp30,000 per kilogram.


In addition, chicken egg from Rp20,000 to Rp22,000, cooking oil Rp9,000 to Rp12,000 and onion from Rp30,000 to Rp35,000.


"Onions and cooking oil had become the most high commodity price hikes. This increase often makes shoppers protest," said Ardi (28), one of Ilir Petojo market traders.


Meanwhile, Central Jakarta Cooperative Micro Small Medium Enterprises and Trade (KUMKMP) Sub-Department, Ety Sartika mentioned, in anticipation of price hikes, his side will regularly conduct unannounced visit with a minimum of four markets every day.


"We also check the stock to be done if there is a rise in anticipation. Today we visited Petojo Ilir Market, Petojo Enclek Market, Rawasari Market and Senen Market," said Sartika.
