TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said said the government is upbeat that in the next five years or in 2020, Indonesia will reach 100 percent electrification.

"I’m optimistic that when Indonesia reaches its 75th year, all of its areas will be fully electrified because currently only 84 percent of the country has access to electricity,” he said Jakarta on Sunday.

Despite such optimism, Sudirman admitted that it would be difficult for the government to provide electricity for remote areas that were impossible to reach.

Therefore, he said, the government would provide solar-powered lights for people in hard-to-reach areas.

“The lamps will be charged in daytime so they can be used in the evening, allowing children, for instance, to study at night,” said Sudirman.

He further said the government would push investors to invest in the energy sector, and it was targeted that investment values in the sector would reach Rp4 quadrillion (US$304 billion) in the next five years.
