TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French tire manufacturer Michelin reiterated its commitment to invest in Indonesia. In a meeting with Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel at the World Expo Milano in Italy, Michelin said it would build an environment-friendly tire factory in Indonesia.
"We told Michelin we are ready to help them create environmentally friendly products using Indonesian rubber as raw material," Rachmat said yesterday.
Michelin's investment plan is in line with the Trade Ministry's agenda to increase uptake domestic absorption of rubber. Rachmat said Michelin's plant would boost the local rubber uptake by at least 700,000 tons per year in 2015.
Industry Minister Saleh Husin said the factory groundbreaking will take place in 2016, and operations will start in 2019. Michelin, Saleh said, will prioritize its production for exports and make Indonesia a production base.
