TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysia is under threat of a possible outbreak of a new-strain of Dengue fever, which is said to be more dangerous due to its' capability to inflict severe liver and brain damage as well as its' potential to claim large casualties in a short period of time.
Malaysia's Health Minister, Datuk Seri. S Subramaniam has been quoted by several local media in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday of having said that the outbreak should be perceived as the number one killer in the nation, as the virus have mutated and as such, causes a different set of symptoms compared to the 'traditional' strains.
The virus is still transmitted through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes, but the new strain is said to cause a swelling of the patients' brain tissues, which causes sufferers to experience chronic fatigue, severe headaches, paralysis and coma.
Malaysian health authorities have said that 54 deaths have been caused by the new strain within the first 52 days of 2015, while 25 cases were reported in early 2014.
"The current outbreak is deadlier, and should be regarded as Malaysia's number one killer for the virus inflicts severe brain and liver damages," said Subramaniam.
