BPS: Over 10,000 Villages have No Elementary Schools

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics (BPS) said that 10,985 villages, 13.37 percent of the total number of villages in Indonesia, still do not have primary schools (SD). The number was obtained from the BPS' village potential data gathering, done three times in ten years.


In a press conference in Jakarta, Monday, February 16, BPS chief Suryamin said that in 2,438 villages the closest elementary schools are located at least three kilometers away.


The agency also noted there are 275 sub-districts (kecamatan) that do not have the means of secondary education (junior high schools/SMP), while 816 districts are lacking high schools.


Based on the village potential survey, in April 2014 there were 82,190 village-level administrative areas, 7,074 sub-districts, and 511 districts/regencies/cities in Indonesia.
