TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) is reviewing the development of special economic zones in Papua and West Papua. In the medium-term development plan, there is no area in Papua projected to become a special economic zone.

BKPM chief Franky Sibarani said four areas in Papua and West Papua being studied to become special economic zones are Raja Ampat, Sorong, Teluk Bintuni, and Merauke.

"Papua is a potential market for Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Australia, which are always dominated by Australia," said Latif Adam, an economist with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI).

BKPM is planning to help the ten companies that are currently experiencing investment constraints in Papua. PT Freeport Indonesia, for example, is experiencing investment barriers worth Rp99 trillion. Nine other companies, including six foreign fishing companies, noted Rp13.87 trillion worth of investment barriers, including six foreign fishing companies.
