TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Attorney General's Office's (AGO) planned execution of six narcotics convicts has sparked international condemnation. European Union’s (EU) foreign policy head Federica Mogherini said that the announced execution was deeply regrettable.

“This would be the second round of execution since November 2013,” Federica said in an official press release received by Tempo on January 16, 2015.

One of the death-row inmates executed in Indonesia was a Dutch national named Ang Klem Soei, also known as Tommy Wijaya, 62.

The European Union, Federica said, was against death penalty for all kinds of cases and called on universal abolition for death penalty.

“Death penalty is cruel and inhuman, and has not been shown in any way to act as a deterrent to crime,” Federica added.

The European Union, Federica said, appealed to the Indonesian authorities to stop all pending execution and consider establishing a moratorium on the use of death penalty as a first step toward definitive abolition.

Earlier on Thursday, January 15, 2015, Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo announced that six death-row inmates would be executed in Nusakambangan and Boyolali, Central Java, on Sunday, January 18, 2015. The execution, he added, would not be the last this year.

In addition to Ang Kim Soei, the other five death-row inmates are Marco Archer Cordisa (53) from Brazil, Rani Andriani also known as Melisa Aprilia (39) from Indonesia, Namaona Denis (48) from Malawi, Daniel Enemuo (38) from Nigera, and Tran Tri Bich Hanh (3) from Vietnam.
