TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Muhamad Isnur, head of case handling division at the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH) said that the water tariff at Rp7,200 per cubic meter is the highest charge in South East Asia. According to Isnur, with such a high tariff, Jakarta residents should have been provided with clean and ready-to-drink water.
“The water provided by Palyja and Aetra is dirty, smelly and in small amount,” Isnur told Tempo on Sunday, January 11, 2015.
According to Isnur, Singapore charges far lower tariff at Rp3,000 per cubic meter for higher-quality water than that charged to Jakarta residents.
“Water in Singapore is ready to drink,” he said.
In a contract signed by PAM Jaya and PT Palyja, PAM Jaya is required to pay Rp7,000 per cubic meter to PT Palyja, while PAM Jaya only charges its customers Rp1,000 per cubic meter. Therefore, PAM Jaya had to cover Rp6,000 for the water service.
Isnur noted that the Jakarta administration is facing a potential loss of Rp18.2 trillion (US$1.5 billion) by 2022. In addition, Isnur said that Palyja and Aetra should have been able to provide 80 percent of Jakarta residents with clean water.
“In reality, both company can only provide clean water for 40 percent of Jakarta residents,” he said.
