TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama will send off 30 mosque keepers in Jakarta for umrah pilgrimage.

“This program is the first in Jakarta, but when I was East Belitung Regent, I also often sent mosque keepers to go on umrah,” said Ahok on Tuesday.

The 30 mosque keepers are the result of selection by Jakarta government’s bureau of education and spiritual. They will depart on December 18 and undergo umrah for 10 days.

Ahok said mosque-keeping is a noble job. “They are mosque ambassadors that can draw people to go to mosque. Their job must be appreciated,” said Ahok.

The government plans to conduct a similar program every year. “We will send people to go on hajj pilgrimage if we can,” said Ahok.

He added that the government should issue a policy that restricts people that have gone on hajj pilgrimage to give a chance for those who have never been to the Holy Land.
