KontraS Threatens to Report Jokowi to UN
Senin, 15 Desember 2014 09:02 WIB
TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) vice coordinator Chrisbiantoro said on Sunday he will report the Indonesian government to the UN for going forward with death penalty.
According to Chris, the death penalty violates Indonesia’s commitment with the UN Human Rights Committee because Indonesia and other countries have agreed to impose moratorium on death penalty.
Five convicts will be executed in December 2014. Three people are convicts in drug cases while the other two were involved in premeditated murder. All are males and Indonesian citizens. President Joko Widodo said he would reject clemency request submitted by 64 death row inmates in drug cases.
Chris said although the UN has no authority to ask Indonesia to cancel the execution, he hopes the government still complies to the agreed moratorium.
He added that death sentence gives no deterrent effect on lawbreakers. “Even though there are death sentences, the number of drug-related cases are still high,” he said.
