TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto has long been suspected of being a member of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) since the former pilot of state flag carrier Garuda Indonesia was convicted as the murderer of human rights activist Munir Said Thalib.

Tempo interviewed Pollycarpus twice when he was still detained at Sukamiskin Prison two months ago. During the interviews, the senior pilot had never dismissed the accusations of his being a BIN agent.

“Confirm it with BIN people. If I said no, [I’m afraid] they would say yes, if I said yes, [I’m afraid] they would say no,” he said.

Tempo had been posing the questions multiple times to Pollycarpus, yet his answers had been unclear and irresolute. “Please ask BIN. I don’t need to answer that. They will answer as to whether I am their member or not,” he replied.

BIN has been suspected of involvement in Munir’s assassination. The founder of the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) was poisoned to death using arsenic when en route from Jakarta to the Netherlands.

The police’s investigation into the case at the time had found indicators of BIN’s involvement in Munir’s death—an allegations immediately dismissed by then BIN chief Amir Machmud Hendropriyono.
