TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Commander of the Indonesian Navy's Western Fleet Rear Admiral Widodo said since January this year, the Indonesian Navy has arrested 78 illegal foreign ships that carried out illegal fishing in the Indonesian maritime territory.
"That’s only in the western part,” Widodo told the journalists on board KRI Sultan Hasanuddin in Terempa sea, Anambas islands, Riau Islands province, Friday, December 5, 2014.
He added that out of those 78 fisherman boats, three boats were sunk by ships owned by the Coordinating Body of Sea Security (BKKL) and the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs on Friday.
Those three boats were destroyed by a caliber gun of 12.7 millimeter before being sunk and explored by the Navy.
According to Widodo, Armada Barat TNI AL has 49 warships although not all of them can be used for sea security patrol due to the allocated fuel given by the government.
For this year, the Western Fleet only received 27 percent of the fuel needed, prompting Rear Admitral Widodo to be careful in managing tactics when doing sea patrol with limited fuel.
In 2014, the Western Fleet has carried out 12 security operations.
