Bombings in Iraq Kill Scores of People

TEMPO.CO, Baghdad - Suicide bombings and car bombs in three different locations killed 23 people in Iraq on Wednesday, November 12, 2014, police, military and medical sources said.
A car bomb, followed shortly afterwards by a suicide bombing, killed 11 people at a police building in Al-Nisour Square in Baghdad. The casualties including six policemen while 21 others were reported wounded.
In the Diyala province, north of Baghdad, Army Colonel Faisal al-Zuhairi was killed when a suicide bomber in a Humvee attacked his convoy. Five of his men were also reported dead.
Meanwhile, a suicide bomber driving a car packed with explosives attacked an army checkpoint in the town of Yusifiya, 15 kilometers south of Baghdad. Police reported that six people were killed and 20 wounded in the incident.
Until Wednesday, November 12, 2014, no group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. But allegations pointed to Islamic State (ISIS) militants who has swept through northern Iraq in June.
Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said last Tuesday that he intended to remove concrete security barriers from Baghdad and give a greater role to police in protecting the capital. He also praised the security operations in the city of 7 million people to be "exceptional."
