TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - New York authorities reported that a doctor who had recently returned to the United States (US) from Guinea has tested positive for the deadly Ebola virus.
Dr. Craig Spencer, who works for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) was feeling feverish when he was admitted on Thursday, Ocotber 23, 2014. His case is the first case to be diagnosed in New York - the most populated city in the US.
More than 4,800 have died from Ebola since March 2014 - the majority of casualties hail from Liberia and Sierra Leone.
Dr. Spencer fell ill with fever and diarrhea on Thursday and was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where has was immediately isolated, said health officials.
Medical responders from the US Department of Health and Human Services took to the streets to see whether the patient had made direct contact, and to try and isolate those who are at risk of catching the deadly virus from Dr. Spencer.
Experts have said that the Ebola virus is readily transmittable through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals.
It is known that Dr. Spencer is the fourth reported case of Ebola in the United States - the first known patient had traveled from Liberia to Dallas, Texas, before beginning to display any symptoms. The man succumbed to the disease on October 8, 2014.
Two nurses who had been involved in the care of the deceased also became infected with Ebola - although both are currently recuperating in isolation.
Meanwhile, Mali reported its' first case of Ebola when a girl who had recently returned to Mali from Geneva became sick from the virus. The mother of the girl had recently passed away and relatives took the initiative to bring the girl back to Mali, said Mali's Health Minister as quoted by Reuters.
Mali is the sixth West African nation to be affected by the Ebola outbreak. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared Nigeria and Senegal as'Ebola-free'.
Furthermore, WHO reported that Ebola has killed 244 out of the 443 health workers who became infected with the virus.
