TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) this morning evicted 101 illegal buildings located near Gondangdia station, Central Jakarta. The illegal buildings were used as food stalls, parking lots and futsal fields.

"Areas near the railway and the railway itself must be free from illegal buildings," said Agus Komarudin, Head of Public Relations Division of PT KAI.

According to Agus, the eviction was done to restore the function of the land owned by the government as well as to maintain pillars supporting the elevated railways.

"It will be difficult to maintain those pillars if there are illegal buildings around," Agus said.

Later, the Jakarta provincial government is set to transform the areas into a green open space.

Residents and vendors have previously received notices for three times to vacate their stalls.

No resistance from both residents and vendors when the officers started tearing down the buildings manually.
