TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Maj. Gen. Amirul Isnaini, the commanding officer of the Indonesian army’s Special Forces (Kopassus), has denied that any of his command was involved in the murder of Papuan Presidium chairman Theys Hiyo Eluay. “None of my subordinates were in any way involved in the case,” the Kopassus commander told TEMPO News Room by phone on Tuesday night (26/3). Earlier on Tuesday however, Maj. Gen. Sjafrie Sjamsudin, the Indonesian Military (TNI) spokesman, had stated there were strong indications that the TNI had been involved in Theys’ murder. According to Isnaini, there was no indication of any Kopassus soldiers being involved, based on the report he had already received of an investigation into the murder. He also denied that the Kopassus soldiers allegedly involved in Theys’ murder had already been detained at the TNI Military Police Center. “All of my 6,000 subordinates are accounted for. There‘s no way any of them could have been detained without legal procedure,” said Isnaini. On Monday last week (18/3), it was reported in Koran Tempo that three Kopassus soldiers berets’ members had been detained for their alleged involvement in Theys’ murder. (Bernarda Rurit)
