Japan Resumes Import of Indonesian Chicken Products

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After a decade of banning chicken produce from Indonesia because of the avian flu outbreak, Japan will reopen its import of Indonesian processed chicken in October. A special team from Japan is now auditing chicken meat processing in Indonesia, an official from the Indonesian Agriculture Ministry told Tempo yesterday.
Syukur Iwantoro, director general of livestock, said four local companies are ready to export processed chicken products to Japan. PT Japfa Comfeed, PT Sierad Produce, PT Charoend Pokphand Indonesia, and PT Malindo Feedmill will export meatballs, nuggets, sausages, chicken satay (kitori), and prepped fried chicken (karage).
Syukur said Japanese government holds a series of quality control tests to make sure that chicken processing activities are carried out in accordance with international standards. With Japan ending its imports ban of processed chicken from Indonesia, the poultry industry is expected to garner additional revenues.
"It will serve as potential new revenue that will continue to grow," he said.
