OJK Gathers Insurance Agent Data to Protect Consumers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) will compile database of insurance agents to boost protection on consumers.
Ngalim Sawega, OJK's deputy commissioner for non-banking financial industry, said yesterday that prospective insurance customers are often deceived by products. "Sometimes, what was offered is different from the real product."
Insurance agents act on behalf of companies, which is why the OJK is gathering data from insurance companies in order to ease the checkings should there be any irregularities.
For such plan, the OJK has coordinated with the General Insurance Association of Indonesia (AAUI) and the Indonesian Life Insurance Association (AAJI), institutions that have been issuing certificates for insurance agencies.
Based on AAJI’s data, there are at least one million certified life insurance agents. However,only 360 agents are still active. On the other hand, AAUI recorded 18,000 certified agents, particularly 1,300 certified agents for surety bond. "Insurance companies have been asked to submit data of all individual agents."
