TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Economic Minister Chairul Tanjung said economic development challenges for the next government are tough and geopolitical situation will affect Indonesia’s economic geography. "It’s not easy for the next government to accelerate the economic growth," he said earlier today.
Chairul predicted that next year’s economic growth will only be around five percent. "If the economy can increase by six percent, it is very good."
The most important thing that the next government must do is maintaining the economic growth with certain measures. The growth must also be more qualified and can make even distribution of welfare to the people of Indonesia.
The government must also be able to reduce poverty rate. "I hope the gini ratio for poverty will not increase," said the minister.
In his presidential speech today, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono claimed economic growth in 2009-2013 period was 5.9 percent. During the time, Indonesia’s economic growth was higher than the economic growth of the United States, Europe and Japan. However, in the first half of this year, Indonesia’s economic growth slowed down to 5.2 percent.
