TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation announced that a ship called Berkat Bersaudara had sunk in the waters between Dolok, Kuala Kapuas and Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. The accident took the lives of ten passengers. Eight are still missing.
"The ship was carrying 60 passengers and 15 motorcycles," Julius Adravida Barata, the Transportation Ministry's public communication chief, told Tempo on Tuesday, July 29. Julius said the ship was not a ferry.
The vessel sank Tuesday morning at 8:45 local time. The ship was heading to Dolok, Kuala Kapuas, an area located just 700 meters from Panamas Village where it departed.
Wahyudi, chief of Kuala Kapuas Port operating unit, said the ship sank because of passenger overload.
