TEMPO.CO, Gaza – The worsening violence in Gaza has made Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to ask the United Nations for “international protection”.

"Israel went deeper in everything and its offensive on the Palestinian nation should be stopped," said Abbas as quoted by ABC Net on Monday.

Abbas has sent a letter to UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon through UN special envoy Robert Serry, whom he met on Sunday in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq confirmed receipt of the letter. “We will need to study it before responding further,” said Haq.

At least 166 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in the seven days of conflict between Israel and Palestine, while more than 1,000 have been injured. The international community has urged the UN to take actions to end this conflict.
