Jokowi: Economic Growth Above 7% Achievable

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Presidential candidate Joko Widodo is targeting Indonesia's economic growth to exceed seven percent. "I believe our economy can grow more than seven percent; under some conditions," the man also known as Jokowi answered rival Prabowo Subianto during last night's (June 15) televised presidential debate at the Gran Melia Hotel, Jakarta.


Jokowi said Indonesia's economic growth could be higher than seven percent as long as the investment climate is conducive and investment-related regulations are completely open—especially in providing opportunities for local investors.


The inactive Jakarta Governor also said that investments in rural areas will lead to employment opportunities.


"So, a [growth] target of seven percent is not difficult [to achieve]," he said.


To achieve growth, Jokowi said, industries need to be export-oriented. The former Solo mayor said that small and household industries' products can compete with foreign products; as long as they are given incentives that would allow them to export.


"Ambassadors need to play the marketer's role to [sell] our domestic products. Our products can be competitive as long as they are being marketed," he said.


The presidential debate was held for the second time last night. Unlike the first, this debate—with "Economic Development and Social Welfare" as topic—did not include the vice-presidential candidates. Brawijaya University's economist Ahmad Erani Mustika acted as moderator.


Indonesia's presidential campaign is held from June 4 to July 5, 2914. During the month, the General Election Committee (KPU) will have five debates that are broadcast live by 11 television stations.
