ITB Introduces 'Si Neng', the Dancing Robot

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Students of Bandung Technical Institute (ITB) developed a man-like robot, known as humanoid, that is fluent in Balinese dancing. Made from light but solid alloy, the humanoid cost around Rp50 million, according to one of its makers, Silvia.
The humanoid, named as "Si Neng", was exhibited in the Electrical Engineering Days 2014. The Robot Golem is consisted of 22 motors, all functioning to motorized its joint.
Si Neng is to be competed on Indonesian Art Robot Contest 2014 in Yogyakarta. In the competition, all robots are required to dance Balinese dance Legong Lasem. "It will not be same as the regular dance as it requires fast and spinning movement," said Silvia.
The dancing humanoid is designed to automatically dance when the music is played. The humanoid uses Fast Fourier Transform algorithm that is able to detect music at 100 to 20,000 hertz. Other than that, the robot is also equipped with a tiny camera to detect its staging.
