5.9-Magnitude Quake Hits Taiwan

TEMPO.CO, Taipei - A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan this morning at around 8.21 a.m. local time. There have yet to be reports on casualties or damage.


Channel News Asia reported that the quake's epicenter was 33.3-kilometer southwest of the eastern city of Hualien Province, at a depth of 18 kilometers. Residents in Taipei also felt the tremors.


The quake's epicenter was located on an island near the junction of two tectonic plates. The island is regularly hit by earthquakes.


A 6.3-magnitude earthquake shook the region in June last year and killed four people. The earthquake has also caused landslides in a number of areas.


The most severe earthquake struck Taiwan in September 1999. With a 7.6-magnitude scale, the earthquake caused massive damages and killed 2,400 people.
