Governor Soekarwo on Dolly: We Need Persuasive Measures

TEMPO.CO, Ngawi - East Java Regional Government sees there was an odd of sex workers migration from Surabaya to other towns, in light of the closure of Dolly Red Light District on June 19. "It is possible that that they [the sex workers] will move to other towns. Therefore, we need persuasive measures," said East Java, Governor Soekarwo.
Soekarwo mentioned that East Java Government, along with the city administrations, have conducted some attempts to prevent such migration from happening. An example of the measures includes databasing the existing sex workers, as well as endorsing workshop for skill-based work such as sewing and cooking. "The province will help provide limitless amount of capital because the issue is a social disaster and that it has become provincial program," Soekarwo added.
The notion of Dolly's closure has become a hot and major topic for the last four years, igniting pros and cons from all society layers. Surabaya Mayor, Tri Rismaharini, on stating her stance, is confident that the area has a better prospect on becoming a center for economic activity that hosts street vendors and crafters.
