Tropical cyclone threats Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spokesman Hari Tirto Djatmiko said rains in several regions in Indonesia resulted from Tropical Cyclone Gillian.

According to Hari, there was still potential for light rains in the west coast of Bengkulu, Lampung, and southern West Java. He added, ocean waves of two to three-meter-tall are also likely to occur in the waters off western Lampung, southern Sunda Strait and from southern Banten to West Java. “The Indian Ocean south of Lampung and Central Java also have the potential for ocean waves of three to five meters,” he said on Monday.

However, Hari said there was nothing to worry about as Cyclone Gillian would only increase the intensity of regular rainfalls as opposed to heavy rains.

Hari explained Cyclone Gillian had occured for a week in southern Australia. The cyclone has appeared intermittently in southwest of Banten and is currently drifting away from southern Indonesia.

Tropical cyclones emerge due to a rise in the sea surface temperature followed by hurricanes with a velocity of 30 knots or 60 km/h. This cyclone usually comes out from January to May in southern Indonesia and will shift to northern Indonesia in June.
