TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Mari ElkaPangestu, predicted that income from the tourism sector will increase by US$1 billion after Garuda Indonesia joins the world airline organization SkyTeam. In 2013, the income from the tourism sector was recorded at US$ 9,4 billion.
"Now if we look at the profits, domestic flights are double than international flights. With Garuda on the SkyTeam we hope that it will increase even faster," said Mari on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.
In addition, the minister stated that the target of foreign tourists is set at 500,000 to 1 million tourists. Mari stated that she is yet to set a target of 10 million foreign tourist visits. "It is all a process," she said.
She added that in order to hit the 10 million mark, growth of airline passengers must increase by 12 to 12,5 percent, something Mari said could be achieved in the near future.
"Last year there were 9 million visitors. This year we predict an increase of six to eight percent, which would be around 9,3 to 9,5 million people. Providing direct flights is one the effort to increase the number of passengers," she said.
