TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two telecommunication service providers, Telkomsel and Indosat, were convinced that the tapping issue would not affect their number of consumers.
Telkomsel's Vice President of Corporate Communication, Adita Irawati, said that the rumor saying Telkomsel was involved in tapping a number of state officials' communication by the United States and Australia would not provide impact on the company's performance.
"No impact has been seen, but we believe that it won't affect the number of our customers," Adita told Tempo yesterday.
Earlier, Australian local media, Brisbane Times and Canberra Times, published reports based on leaks from the National Security Agency (NSA) mentioning that the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) had accessed Indosat's data to tap a number of Indonesian officials. In 2013, NSA also allegedly tapped Telkomsel's customers by acquiring the company's 1.8 million encryption keys.
"This issue must be resolved. Although we were not involved, if this continues to develop, the company will bear risks," Adita stated.
Indosat's Head of Public Relation Division Adrian Prasanto said the tapping issue would not result in customers' migration to other service providers.
"There has been no customer migration. In the future, we will enhance the network security to gain customers' trust," Adrian said.
The number of Indosat's customer in the last quarter of 2013 reached 53.8 million, of which 800,000 are postpaid customers.
During yesterday's trading session, Indosat's stock was at 4,000, dropped from the day before which was set to reach 4,010. Prior to the issue, Indosat's stock reached 4,090 on February 3. Meanwhile, Telkom's stock was at 2,295 dropped from 2,375 the day before.
