TEMPO.CO, Banda Neira - Just by the blue ocean and the shimmering shadow of Mount Banda, Mohammad Hatta and Sutan Sjahrir were set on an exile in 1936. The two, after leaving Boven Digul exile in Papua, lived in Banda Neira and continued their time in Dutch colonization until 1942.

"The Dutch exiled Hatta and Sjahrir in the heavenly place, hoping that they will get softened by the beauty of Banda Neira," said Meutia Farida Hatta Swasono, daughter of first Indonesian Vice President Mohammad Hatta. "Such attempt by the Dutch was in vain."

By the fort lies Maulana Hotel, built by Des Alwi Abubakar, foster child of Hatta and Sjahrir. The hotel is known to have hosted famous people such as Sarah Ferguson, daughter-in-law of Queen of England, back in 1993. Some other figures have also set foot in the hotel like world-class diver Jacques Yves Costeau and Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger.

Banda Neira is one of the main islands in in Central Moluccas, having in total of 12 islands. Unlike the Capital, cars are not a privilege to see on the island. "We would prefer taking a stroll or a bike. Besides, fuel is somewhat scarce in the area," said local resident Lukman Ang. Started off as an exile, Neira now has turned as a complete getaway, ensuring good time and classic atmosphere during holiday time for the restless.
