TEMPO.CO, Bangui - French forces began to disarm rebels in the Central African Republic to end violence between armed groups that has killed hundreds of people since early this month. According to Reuters, gunshots were heard near airport when French military searched for weapons in Bangui.

In the clash, Seleka supreme commander, Nourdine Adam, was arrested. "Nourdine Adam was taken into custody and transferred to the airport's international military base," Al Jazeera correspondent, Nazanine Moshiri, reported on Monday. "He stayed there for a while, but he was later seen at the Presidential Palace."

Violence in the former French colony involves Seleka Muslim rebels from the neighboring country, Chad, and has since been fighting against anti-Balaka Christian group.

Seleka is the rebels that seized power in March 2013 and placed Michel Djotodia as the president as well as the first Muslim president in the Christian-majority country.
