Three Navy Officers Arrested for Smuggling Illegal Immigrants

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three Indonesian navy officers were arrested in southern Garut Regency, West Java, for allegedly intending to smuggle 106 illegal Rohingya immigrants from Myanmar to Australia. "They have been given to Bandung naval military police," said Indonesian Army Police Detachment Commander Lieutenant Colonel Suparno yesterday.
Based on information gathered by Tempo, the three navy officers escorted illegal immigrants from Bogor to Garut. They were transported using tour buses and escorted by Suzuki APV and Avanza cars.
Garut Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner Arif Rachman explained that the illegal immigrants were caught in front of Cibalong Police. They were heading to Cipangikis Beach, Sancang Village. They intended to go to Christmas Island, Australia, by boat.
Police also arrested six Indonesians including smuggling coordinator named Asep.
The immigrants consist of 20 children, 67 men, and 19 women. They were caught yesterday at 4.15 am. "All immigrants have been sent to Tasikmalaya Immigration Office," said Arif.
