TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Australian government has asked Asian countries to play their role in encouraging the dialog process with North Korea as the settlement of the problems on the Korean peninsula cannot depend solely on efforts by the US government. Australian Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer made this statement to the press following a meeting with Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirajudha at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Tuesday morning (11/3). According to Downer, Asian countries, such as those involved in Asian regional forums, can help in maintaining security and stability in the Korean peninsula. He said he was also convinced that the use of nuclear weapons by North Korea would have a great impact on Asia. If a war were to take place in the Korean peninsula region, Downer said, there will be a monetary crisis in Australia. He said he was convinced that the same would happen in Indonesia. Downer also said that the Australian government has sent a special delegation, like Indonesia, to help the dialog process with North Korea. In their meeting, both Downer and Wirayudha agreed to fix the time for discussing the North Korean issue within the next weeks. We will find out what we can do about the problem, stated Downer.
