TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, a cadre of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), read the “Dedication of Life”— a famous piece of writing first Indonesian president Soekarno composed in September 10, 1966—in the party’s national work meeting today.
PDI-P chief Megawati Soekarnoputri said he asked Jokowi to read the piece as she deemed the governor to be the successor of Soekarno.
“Jokowi read the “Dedication of Life” because it signals the meaning of a new generation,” Megawati told the meeting before delivering his political statement.
The crowd responded to Megawati’s statement with a roaring applause. “Jokowi has perceived Soekarno’s vibrations,” Megawati said.
Megawati said as she stopped the applause that Jokowi was not the only successor of Soekarno, but all the party’s cadres were, particularly those who became regional leaders as governors. PDI-P governors, Megawati continued, must naturally follow Soekarno’s example as a leader.
Megawati said Soekarno, despite his ceaseless efforts in developing the country, was ousted and had his thoughts set aside from the central principles in Indonesia. Thus, she called on the nation to preserve his thoughts.
The party’s third national work meeting takes place in Ancol, North Jakarta, from September 6-8, 2013. The party’s 501 branch executive boards (DPC), 33 central executive boards (DPP), lawmakers of the House of Representatives and regional heads attended the meeting.
During the meeting, all of the party’s branches will have the opportunity to voice their aspirations, including on the party’s presidential candidate. Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo is among those proposed.
