Oil Spills off Singapore from Ship Collision

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - About 100 tons of fuel spilled off the coast of Singapore when two cargo vessels ran into each other off the island's coast on July 2.
The oil leaked from the Oriental Pioneer, registered in South Korea, after its crash with the Bahamas-registered Atlantic Hero, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement. The accident happened about 7 kilometers southwest of Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.
Shortly after the accident the Singapore Port Authority deployed 11anti-pollution and patrol vessels and 100 personnel with biodegradable oil dispersants and spill-containment devices to clean up the mess, Bloomberg reported.
On July 3, the port authority reported it was making good progress getting things under control. No significant oil patches were sighted in the affected waters, although there were some oil stains on the shoreline near Tanah Merah, Channel NewsAsia reported.
Port operations were not affected, nor were vessel traffics in the Strait of Singapore and port waters. No one was injured.
