TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - About 602 traditional boats in Manado compete for Manado Mayor's Cup at the second bay boat festival in part of Manado's 390th anniversary celebration. The festival was held for two days starting from July 5 and participated by fishermen.

"People's interest in the event is quite high. The target was only 390 boats," said the Organizer Chief Excecutive Hi Rum Dj Usulu. The festival that was held in Bitung Karang Ria beach was quite exciting. There were several competitions; some of them are Baku Rebe Parahu (boat race), Tarik Tambang Parahu (boat tug of war) and Lomba Parahu Hias (boat carnival). The festival also enlivened by traditional music orchestra.

The fishermen also used the opportunity to raise their rejection on the government's reclamation on their beach. "We are always being pushed aside because of the reclamation. Please do not condemn us from our harbor anymore," said the fishermen. "This is to show to the government that we still exist." The festival was attended by government officials and local public figures.
