TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Balikpapan administration, East Kalimantan, will require all new senior high school students (SMA) to undergo urine test. The policy aims to control drug abuse among students in Balikpapan.
"We require urine test for students who are about to enter senior high school or vocational school (SMK) or MA, to know whether they have used drugs before," said Balikpapan Mayor Rizal Effendi on Tuesday, June 25.
In the meantime, Rizal said that urine tests are only performed for some students, who are perceived to have strong tendency to drug abuse. "The system will be random, so its not intended for all students. The officer will know which one needs to do urine test,"he said.
Rizal expects that the test will give deterrent effect to other students. He ensures that the students who have been proven as drug users will still enjoy their rights of education. "As an active user or an addict, or just tried, they may still go to school, but they have to undergo rehabilitation first," he said.
