TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hundreds of protesters rallied in front of National Stadion in Brasilia prior to the 2013 Confederation cup 2013 opening between Brazil and Japan on Sunday morning, June 16th 2013.

At least 500 people were protesting against the high cost used to hold Confederation Football Championship and the coming of 2014 World Football Championship.

Some protesters burned tyres and attempted to close the stadium’s access. There was no direct confrontation, but a few tear gas bombs were thrown by the police to try to control the protesters as they moved near the venue.

"We are demanding more respect to the population," said 21-year-old Vinicius de Assis, one of the protesters as quoted by Daily Mail. "They are building these overpriced stadiums and are not worrying about the situation of their own people."

The demonstrators also shouted against FIFA, saying that football's governing body does not have the right to make demands on the Brazilian government. Fortunately, the opening ceremony and the match went on schedule.

Brasil won 3-0 over Japan in the opening match of the Confederation Cup. Brazil's three goals were executed by Neymar, Pauinho, and Jo Aives.
