TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Peoples Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Amien Rais has suggested the government review the recent price hikes with House of Representatives (DPR). I hope the government will still review its decision, Rais told reporters at the legislature complex in Jakarta on Tuesday (7/1). According to Rais, he made this suggestion after seeing that many people in Indonesia have showed resistance over the price hikes, particularly the increase in fuel prices. I regret the governments decision to make policies that are not beneficial to itself, said Rais. According to him, such policies have caused losses to the people, such as happened with the divestment of PT Indosat and the issuing of release and discharge letters for major debtors. Will the government be able to survive the political and social problems that could occur because of the current policies? Rais asked. He suggested that the government hold another meeting with the DPR and various elements within the community to discuss the price hikes. Even if the price hikes cannot be cancelled, Rais proposed that such hikes be postponed until the public regains their purchasing power. If the members of the public regain their purchasing power, I think they wont mind the price hikes, he stated. (Andi Dewanto - Tempo News Room)
