TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:National Police chief Gen. Da’i Bachtiar has said he is convinced that the handling of cases such as the fraud case of BNI Bank could be settled within this year. “By God’s will, the police will work hard to settle this case,” said Bachtiar in a press conference held at the National Police headquarters (HQ), Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon (6/1). The statement of Bachtiar came as a response to the instruction of President Megawati Soekarnoputri for the police to settle the fraud cases of BNI and BRI and other banking cases within this year. All this time, Bachtiar said, the government has shown a strong commitment in handling corruption cases. “Since the beginning of the BNI case, the police have carried out an intensive investigation into the case,” he stated. The efforts to settle the case include the arresting of suspects and delivering the dossiers of the BNI suspects to the Attorney General’s Office (AGO). “We hope this case can be processed immediately through the courts,” said Bachtiar. So far, the National Police HQ officers have detained 16 suspects. However, the police are yet to arrest one main suspect in the BNI fraud case, Maria Pauline Lumowa, as she is still in Singapore.
