TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:New settlements for refugees in Indonesia, assisted by funds from the Kuwait government, will be built this March. Kuwait Minister of Finance Yousif al Ibrahim made this statement to the press following his meeting with Vice President Hamzah Haz at the vice president’s office in Jakarta today (20/2). As reported earlier, Kuwait has given financial support to Indonesia in establishing refugees’ settlement. Ten new settlements, capable of accommodating 550 families, are scheduled to be built in areas such as Madura in East Java, Poso in Central Sulawesi, Maluku and East Nusa Tenggara. Al Ibrahim said that the Kuwait government has agreed to give US$ 50-million fund for various projects in Indonesia. “We’ve reached this agreement with Indonesia and we are awaiting further response from the Indonesian government regarding the details of those projects we will finance,” Al Ibrahim stated. So far, Kuwait has invested US$ 2 billion in a number of economic sectors in Indonesia, mainly in the oil sector. These investments have been in the form of direct assistance, and indirectly, by funding the construction of infrastructure and other facilities. During his visit, al Ibrahim also invited President Megawati Sukarnoputri and Vice President Hamzah Haz to visit Kuwait. As a further step towards expanding economic cooperation between two countries, Al Ibrahim hoped the president or the vice president would bring economic ministers and Indonesia’s business community during their visit to Kuwait. Al Ibrahim expressed his desire to see Indonesia’s private sector participate more in economic relations between the two countries.
