TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, announced that the social media platform X has pledged to start deactivating user accounts under the age of 16 today, Saturday, March 28, 2026.
"We appreciate the commitment to identify and deactivate accounts starting from [Saturday]," said Meutya in a press conference broadcast through YouTube on Friday, March 27, 2026.
In addition to deactivating underage user accounts, Meutya said the social media platform X has announced that it is setting the minimum age limit to 16 years. She mentioned that this change had been implemented since March 17, 2026, as announced on the help center page.
The change in the minimum age limit for X users, according to Meutya, has also been harmonized with the platform's community guidelines.
Minister Meutya said she has requested eight platforms to implement the Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Organization of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP Tunas) which takes effect today, Saturday, March 28, 2026.
However, until March 27, 2026, at 9:30 p.m. local time, Meutya said only two platforms, including X, have fully cooperated with the regulation.
In addition to X, Meutya announced that Bigo Live has changed the minimum age limit from 13 to 18 years in its user content and privacy policy agreements. Bigo Live has also requested an update on the age limit from the App Store, said Meutya.
Meutya mentioned that Bigo Live has stated that it will implement a multi-layered moderation system using AI and human verification to check accounts under the age of 18.
Meanwhile, Meutya announced that two other platforms, TikTok and Roblox, have partially cooperated and requested additional time to implement the rules. Meutya said the Indonesian government requests both platforms to fully comply.
Roblox has communicated the plan to limit features for users under 13, said Meutya. "It's not included in the policy since it's a brief communication to our team," she said.
Meanwhile, Meutya mentioned that TikTok has pledged to gradually deactivate user accounts under 16 years old. Meutya mentioned that TikTok plans to announce the operational roadmap for users aged 14-15 today.
