TEMPO.CO, Washington - U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Israeli counterpart and reaffirmed Washington's commitment to Israel's defense, the Pentagon said late on Saturday, August 24, 2024.
Austin "spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant to discuss Israel’s defense against Lebanese (Hezbollah) attacks," a Pentagon readout of the call said.
"Secretary Austin reaffirmed the United States’ ironclad commitment to Israel’s defense against any attacks by Iran and its regional partners and proxies," it added.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday, August 25, 2024, Israel would take all measures necessary to defend itself, after the Iranian-backed Hezbollah launched hundreds of rockets and drones at Israel in retaliation for the killing of a senior commander.
"We are determined to do everything possible to defend our country, to return the residents of the north safely to their homes and to continue to uphold a simple rule: Whoever harms us – we harm him," he said in a statement.
