TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) assesses that the Supermoon phenomenon that coincides with the perigee momentum (closest distance between moon and earth) on August 20, 2024, could increase the sea level.

Based on water level observation data, the agency expects tidal flooding to sweep several coastal areas in Indonesia.

Head of the BMKG Maritime Meteorology Center, Eko Prasetyo, said the affected regions range from the coastal areas of North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau Islands, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, East Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, and Papua.

According to Eko, tidal flooding can affect coastal communities and activities such as the loading and unloading of goods, salt ponds, and inland fisheries.

He urged to the public to stay informed about maritime weather forecasts and information from BMKG. "Always be vigilant to anticipate the impact of maximum sea water tides," he said in a written statement, Monday, August 19, 2024.

BMKG mapped out several locations at risk of tidal flooding this week:

1. Coastal areas of North Sumatra including Medan Belawan Coast, Medan Marelan Coast, and Medan Labuhan Coast
